Most game cover consists of mixtures of species which render weed control by herbicide impractical. Therefore the best technique for controlling weeds is stale seedbed preparation. Essentially what is required is to cultivate the game cover ground in order to get the weed seeds to germinate then spray them off with a total kill herbicide. This can be done more than once if time allows. Then once satisfied that the ground is relatively weed free the game cover crop can be sown. It is essential at this stage to sow the crop with minimal disturbance or extra cultivation to the soil as this reduces the likelihood of a fresh batch of weed seeds being exposed and competing with the game crop.
