Fodder Beet

Fodder beet can produce a high-energy, high dry matter yield when managed carefully. It should be grown on lighter, fertile soils with a target pH of 7 and sown from April to May using precision drilling.

A key advantage over other forage crops is effective weed control through herbicides, early and consistent control is vital to maximise yield. Regular monitoring for pests is also important.

Fodder beet can be lifted or grazed in situ, with machines lifting by roots or leaves. Choose a variety suited to your harvesting method and intended grazing period.

Fodder Beet
High (DM%)
Big DM yields but dirtier roots. Ideal for harvesting with sugar beet machinery
Medium (DM%)
Clean roots ideal for leaf lifting harvesting equipment
