Birdsfoot Trefoil

Legume

(Lotus corniculatus)

A high protein yellow flowered legume often included to add diversity to herbal ley mixtures. It is a low growing perennial and pollinating insects flock to it as a source of nectar. Not as persistent and less aggressive than white clover.

Management

Heavy grazings will sereverly damage the plant population so it should be rotational grazed whenever possible. It needs to be shallowly sown into a warm, fine and firm seedbed.

Birdsfoot trefoil contains tannins which will reduce risk of bloat, increase protein uptake, and has an anti-parasitic effect.
