Fodder Beet

Brassica
(Beta vulgaris)

A very high energy, high yielding winter feed for cattle or sheep. More commonly lifted but can be grazed in situ. Management inputs can be higher than other winter feed crops and requires optimum conditions to be successful in the northern UK.

Uses

Strip graze in situ or lift

Sowing Rate

Precision drilled - 40,000 seeds/acre

Persistence

Annual

Sowing Period

April

Yield Potential

15-18t DM per ha

Management

Should be grown on a light to medium free draining field with a target pH of 7. It is essential to precision drill when the seedbed is a minimum of 5 degrees. Early season weed control is absolutely pivital and care has to be taken to monitor pests. It can be grazed in situ or lifted.

Few other feeds could offer such high quality, yield and low cost per kgDM.

“With measured yields of up to 24T DM/ha, at heights of around 1,200 feet above sea level, fodder beet has the potential to be a real game changer for us.”

- Jim Logan, Pirntaton Farm, Galashiels
