Swedes

They are an excellent choice for producing high dry matter yields suitable for sheep, dairy, and beef cattle. Their high dry matter content also makes them very winter hardy, ideal for post-Christmas grazing. They perform well on a range of soils, with a target pH of 6.5.

Sow from April to early June to maximise yield potential and avoid dry conditions that can delay germination. Precision sowing is preferred for even growth, though broadcasting is possible but may cause greater variation. Apply fertiliser at sowing into the seedbed.

Avoid clubroot by maintaining at least a five-year break from other brassicas. Monitor for pests such as flea beetle and treat promptly if required. To ensure full utilisation and minimise waste, the crop should be strip grazed.
