Forage Rape & Hybrids

A fast-growing forage crop suited to a wide range of soils. It reaches maturity in 12–14 weeks and has a flexible sowing window to match feed requirements. Less winter hardy than kale or swedes, it is best used before Christmas.

Its deep roots make it an excellent pioneer crop, suitable for direct drilling or sowing into a fine, firm seedbed. Apply fertiliser at sowing, with a top dressing of nitrogen if needed. Avoid clubroot by maintaining a five-year break from other brassicas, or choose clubroot-tolerant varieties where risk is higher.

Vigorous growth helps it outcompete pests, but regular monitoring is still advised. A cost-effective option for fattening lambs, flushing ewes, or feeding cattle.
