High quality, protein rich silage

"Using a red clover short term mixture for high quality, protein rich silage for the first time has been a valuable learning experience. After analysing the silage, we achieved protein levels of 14.3%, which is respectable given last year's challenging weather. This mixture also serves as a break crop from spring barley in our crop rotation. Allanfearn Farm lies next to the Moray Firth and has a very light soil type and the deep rooting high tetraploid, red clover mixture has coped extremely well. This field was cut twice, and the aftermath was grazed by lambs destined for the prime market."

- Stuart Grant, Allanfearn Farm, Inverness.
