Following 42 years working in the agricultural industry, including the last 21 years with Watson Seeds, Andrew Best decided the time was right to retire in November. I know that Andrew has enjoyed working with Watson Seeds as much as I’ve enjoyed having him in the team. He took great pleasure in being part of the agricultural community in South West Scotland and I know felt privileged to work with his many loyal customers. He is appreciating spending more time with his family and enjoying his many interests, including cycling and photography. He is also looking forward to continuing with his involvement in the Grassland Society. We all value his commitment and dedication to his customers and Watson Seeds over the decades and I’m sure you will join with us in wishing Andrew all the best for the future.

In September, we were delighted to welcome Andrew’s successor, Andy Nelson to our team. Andy farms, in partnership with his parents, John and Margaret, a productive beef and sheep enterprise comprising of 500 acres near Castle Douglas. He brings with him a wealth of experience and knowledge in both grassland and forage production and management. Testament to this is Andy winning the British Grassland Society’s ‘Grassland Farmer of the Year’ in 2011, the only Scotsman to do so!

His farm has been host to study tours from CAFRE, Ireland, Wales and student groups in Scotland. Andy is at the forefront of agricultural technologies and research which includes piloting alternative watering systems for SRUC, satellite mapping for fertiliser application and being one of three farms in Scotland selected to trial low cost self-feeding outwintering systems in conjunction with SRUC and QMS.

In addition to running and managing his farm, Andy has taken on various roles, including 12 years as a Director on the board of Wallets Marts and latterly as Chairman. He has also been keenly involved in the Stewartry Show for 27 years, including taking on the role of President for 2 years.

Having been a happy customer of Watson Seeds for many years, Andy understands the important role grass and forage play in supporting efficient and sustainable food production as well as being aware of the many challenges and changes farming is facing.

Andy is keen to carry on the exceptional work that has gone hand in hand with Andrew Best throughout his time with Watson Seeds and I’m confident he’ll be a very worthy successor.
